Philippine gaming regulator PAGCOR has inaugurated its 50th socio-civic center, with the latest facility located in Laurel, Batangas – providing a community shelter and an evacuation site during disasters.
The lakeside town of Laurel is situated in the shadows of the active Taal Volcano.
The new Php50 million (US$845,000) facility in Barangay San Gregorio is a two-story building boasting multi-purpose halls, kitchens, restrooms and other disaster-resilient amenities to ensure functionality in both emergencies and day-to-day use, the regulator explained.
“All of these are designed for the safety, comfort, and dignity of our countrymen,” said PAGCOR Assistant Vice President for Community Relations and Services Department (CRSD), Eric Balcos, who turned over the building to Laurel Mayor Lyndon Bruce.
PAGCOR described Laurel as being among the most vulnerable municipalities during periods of volcanic unrest, with its residents often needing evacuation and suffering prolonged disruptions to day-to-day activities.
With 50 socio-civic centers now completed nationwide, the agency also revealed there are another 22 still under construction as part of its efforts to channel gaming revenues into community projects that enhance disaster preparedness and improve the quality of life in local communities.
