Kangwon Land, renowned as the only casino in South Korea at which locals are permitted to gamble, has outlined plans to transform its existing High1 resort area into a global wellness and sports resort – part of its efforts to enhance its international tourism appeal.

The company hosted a “K-HIT project town hall meeting” on Friday at which around 100 domestic and foreign stakeholders were offered a glimpse into initial plans for a comprehensive expansion of Kangwon Land’s offerings and the opportunity to provide feedback. A final announcement reflecting the finalized plan after taking stakeholder opinions into account is scheduled for September.

Friday’s meeting at High1 Grand Hotel Convention Hall included key company executives, internal staff and local government officials, Kangwon Land said in a Monday release.

The K-HIT Master Plan interim report, which was released during the event, introduced three core strategies, the company added: the introduction of world-class landmark facilities; the creation of a competitive wellness resort; and the creation of a comprehensive leisure and sports park to differentiate from other global integrated resorts, with the vision of a “world-class K-complex resort in 2035”.

The expanded resort will feature a ”High1 Grand Dome” as its central feature, standing more than 100 meters high and housing a new casino space, landmark sculptures and a media dome and wall inside the dome.

Kangwon Land’s Interim CEO Choi Cheol-gyu said, “The top priority of the K-HIT project is to revitalize the economy of closed mine areas, which is the founding principle of our company. With the blueprint for growth into a century-old company laid today, we will focus all of our capabilities on growing Kangwon Land into a global resort complex that creates high added value.”

Kangwon Land has previously outlined plans to triple its gaming area capacity by way of a new casino, incorporating new VIP rooms with helicopters utilized to fly in both Korean and international visitors and a sky bridge to link the casino to the nearby High1 Ski and Golf Resort.
