CHANGE is afoot at Wynn Macau Ltd. In the space of less than a week in July, it was announced that both President and Executive Director Ian Michael Coughlan and Wynn Macau Resort COO Ciarán Carruthers would be stepping aside, with former Wynn Palace COO Frederic Luvisutto promoted to COO of Wynn Macau Ltd.
It remains to be seen exactly how such shifting tides impact a company renowned for its exacting standards and dedication to luxury, but the departure of Coughlan looms as particularly significant. While Coughlan isn’t leaving the party altogether – from February 2023 he will transition to advisor and non-executive director – his presence running day-to-day operations across Wynn’s two Macau resorts has long been considered the driving factor in maintaining the luxurious standards which the company has become synonymous with.
Coughlan is intimately familiar with the Wynn Macau brand, having served as President of its peninsula property before stepping up to take on Wynn Palace as well.
Joining the company in January 2007, he became an Executive Director in 2009 and was appointed to his current position in October 2016, guiding the previously underperforming Wynn Palace to record performances in 2018 and 2019 just before the pandemic hit.
Coughlan, whose past experience includes stints with The Peninsula Bangkok and The Peninsula Hong Kong, is highly regarded at Wynn Macau as defender of the Wynn brand. Time will tell whether that legacy will remain in his absence.
Still too energetic and passionate to retire, we suspect it is a question of when and where – not if – Ian Michael Coughlan will re-emerge in the global IR industry.
