The Mayor of Yokohama, Fumiko Hayashi, says there will be no change to the schedule of the city’s bid to develop an integrated resort, despite Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week declaring a state of emergency due to COVID-19.
“We will not review the schedule for the IR bid during the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak,” Hayashi said at a regular press briefing late last week.
The mayor offered a similar answer in response to questions about opposition from some residents’ groups who have demanded the city’s IR schedule be frozen.
“The government says it will not change the period of January to July of next year [for the applications],” Hayashi said. “As a city, we are now moving toward a decision, and we cannot move the schedule because we need to meet the country’s schedule. We cannot stop now.
“I would like to examine the situation with consideration for the state of the nation. Right now, I will not change the schedule.
“However, I believe a lot of things will happen, so I can’t say that everything will go according to schedule, but at this stage the government’s policy has not changed, so we will proceed.”
