Guiding recovery and expansion of Resorts World Manila, the Philippines first integrated resort
President and director of Alliance Global Group, joint venture partner of Genting Hong Kong in IR operator Travellers International Hotel Group
Resorts World Manila accelerated its US$650 million expansion plans following the deadly attack there in June last year. Expansion includes replacing some shuttered gaming areas and reviving the Hilton brand in Manila, with Sheraton, Okura and Four Seasons hotels in the pipeline. Six month results from parent company Travellers International Hotel Group suggest it’s paying off: income increased three and a half times to Php1.7 billion (US$31.8 million).
The enduring appeal of Manila’s first integrated resort stems from its location and unique amenities. RW Manila features state of the art convention complex Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport Performing Arts Theater, a retail mall and an elevated walkway to Ninoy Aquino International Airport. But longstanding gaming market share erosion highlights Travellers’ need to develop its Entertainment City site, which began construction in earnest this year.
Kingson Sian, president of Alliance Global Group, joint venture partner in Travellers with Genting Hong Kong, has been president and a director of the RW Manila project since its 2008 origins and became CEO four years ago. RW Manila’s Newport City setting is an example of billionaire Alliance founder Andrew Tan’s “integrated township” development model including residential units and community facilities. Westside City Resorts World in Entertainment City will likely follow that example.
