The Macau government has appointed the Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), Raymond Tam, as interim Director of the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau following the sacking of former Director Fong Soi Kun in the wake of Typhoon Hato.
Mr Tam, who boasts no meteorological background, will fill the role for one year while also maintaining his normal DSPA duties.
Macau Chief Executive Chui Sai On said he had considered “the overall public administration as a whole” when appointing Tam, adding that he will have a team of technicians alongside to support him.
Mr Fong was sacked within days of Typhoon Hato hitting last month amid allegations that the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau had failed to issue adequate storm warnings due to concerns over its potential impact on the city’s gaming industry.
The Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) has instructed the Administrative Appeals Bureau to conduct a special investigation into the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau’s typhoon forecasting process as well as its internal management systems, with Mr Fong named as a central figure to its investigations.
