Around 90% of the middle and senior staff of Macau’s six concessionaires are now local employees, the government has revealed.
According to information made public by Secretary for Economy and Finance Tai Kin Ip during a plenary session of the Legislative Assembly (AL), there are currently 11,594 middle and senior staff working for the concessionaires of which 10,407 or 89.8% are locals.
Tai was responding to a question from AL members about local employment, adding that the government’s position of not approving the introduction of foreign employees in the three occupations of dealers, pit supervisors and professional drivers has remained unchanged.
“The government has insisted on maintaining a high proportion of local senior management staff in the six concessionaires,” Tai said, pointing out that the concessionaires had been asked to continue creating favorable conditions for local residents to take up relevant positions.
However, he also observed that Macau is a “diversified society”.
“If the management staff of large-scale enterprises is composed of people from different cultural backgrounds, it can, to a certain extent, help diversified exchanges and promote the development of Macau’s internationalization,” he said.
Macau’s updated Gaming Law, implemented in 2022, stipulates that concessionaires are required to ensure the protection of labor rights and interests – and in particular the protection of labor rights, on-the-job training and upward mobility – of local employees.
