Macau’s Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Tam Vai Man, has revealed that preliminary research on connection of the light rail system to Qingmao Port has concluded that it is feasible, but relevant works still need to be finalized.
Macau’s LRT system is mainly concentrated in the Taipa area, with only the A-Ma station connecting to the Macau Peninsula at present. The government is now launching a project to connect the LRT system to Border Gate between Macau and Zhuhai, with the relevant line named “LRT East Line”.
Tam Vai Man pointed out at a Legislative Assembly meeting on Thursday that the government had already reached a preliminary conclusion on the feasibility study of extending the LRT East Rail Line to the Qingmao Port, and the conclusion was that the project was feasible.
However, he noted that “the shield tunnel for the extension of the LRT East Rail to Qingmao Port will pass through a number of important facilities at the Border Gate, and the geological complexity along the route makes it technically difficult to construct.”
It will therefore be necessary, he explained, to propose protection schemes for many important facilities during the construction process. “The project proposal has yet to be finalized, but the government will continue to work on it,” he said.
The previous Macau government had stated that the LRT East Line might connect to the Qingmao Port – a 24-hour land border crossing in Macau that officially opened in 2021.
