Star Entertainment Group’s troubled road to remediation has taken another blow with Mark Mackay quitting as CEO of The Star Gold Coast just 95 days after stepping into the role. His departure represents the second such incident in 2024 alone, with predecessor Jessica Mellor having quit as CEO of the Gold Coast resort in April after just six months in the job.
Star didn’t provide any reason for Mackay’s exit, stating only that it was effective immediately and that the company had commenced a process for recruiting a new CEO for The Star Gold Coast.
“We thank Mark Mackay for his assistance and wish him well for the future,” said Star’s Group CEO & Managing Director, Steve McCann.
Mackay’s departure comes just a week after the Queensland state government announced it had deferred a decision on suspending The Star Gold Coast’s casino license until 31 March 2025 while it determines what action the company is taking to fix historical compliance issues.
The company, which recently secured an AU$100 million debt facility from lenders, is also seeking further financial assistance amid serious liquidity concerns as a result of regulatory crackdowns in both Queensland, home of The Star Gold Coast and The Star Brisbane, and New South Wales, home of The Star Sydney.
Mackay joined Star in September after seven years at Crown Resorts and was touted at the time as a key member of the company’s new property leadership structure alongside The Star Sydney CEO Janelle Campbell and The Star Brisbane CEO Daniel Finch, both appointed in January.
