Macau’s new outdoor performance venue will stage its first large-scale performance on 28 December but will be operated on a trial basis for one year, according to latest information from the government.
The 50,000-capacity venue is funded by the government and is not linked to any of the city’s gaming concessionaires. Covering 94,000-square-meters, it was built between July and November at cost of more than MOP$80 million.
The 28 December debut concert will be organized by a Hong Kong television company, understood to be Hong Kong TVB, with acts from Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and other Asian countries to perform. The budget for the concert is around MOP$20 million and local Macau residents will have access to discounted tickets.
Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Leong Wai Man said Thursday that the outdoor performance venue will operate for a trial period of one year, although this could be shortened or extended as required.
Leong also pointed out that the government was drawing up guidelines for venue use, including the contents and fees for applications to organize activities.
“Every month, the government receives enquiries from enterprises on the details of venue utilization, but applications will not be accepted until the venue is in full operation,” she said.
There are some community concerns around transportation support and crowd dispersal measures for the venue, with a community advisory committee suggesting the government should coordinate with SJM – owner of adjacent resort Grand Lisboa Palace – about providing free parking services to the public.
