The Macau International Airport expansion project has officially begun, with Macau International Airport Co Ltd (CAM) expecting the project to take nearly six years to complete.
CAM said Monday that the project will be carried out in phases and will be divided into six reclamation areas. Between the runway and the apron will be a new floodway, taxiway system expansion and addition of an express taxiway, renovation of the apron and the various types of aircraft berths, more navigation aids and ancillary facilities.
The two new taxiways and the newly built apron will be completed by 2028, after which the existing taxiways will be dismantled.
Set to include over 129 hectares of reclaimed land, the project is expected to be fully completed by 2030, increasing the total usable area of the airport to 325 hectares and leaving a sufficient reserve for its future development.
CAM estimates that the annual passenger handling capacity of the first phase of the airport will be increased from 10 million to 13 million upon completion of the reclamation.
