Macau’s hotel occupancy rate rose by 6.3 percentage points year-on-year to 84.7% in September this year, according to figures from the Statistics and Census Service. The average occupancy rate for the first three quarters of the year climbed by 4.8 percentage points to 85.4%.
As of September, there were 144 hotel establishments providing accommodation services, an increase of seven year-on-year, while the number of rooms available decreased by 3.3% to 44,000 rooms.
The 85.4% occupancy rate for the first three quarters include occupancy of 87.5% in five-star hotels, while four-star hotels reached 81.2% and three-star hotels 82.9%. These represented year-on-year increases of six percentage points, three percentage points and 2.4 percentage points respectively.
Total hotel guests in the first three quarters also increased by 11.2% year-on-year to 10.9 million and by 3.3% over the same period in 2019. International guests increased by 86.8% year-on-year to 779,000, of which 229,000 guests were Korea – up by 140%. The average length of stay was maintained at 1.7 nights in the first three quarters.
In September this year, the total number of guests decreased by 2.1% year-on-year to 1.1 million, while the average length of stay was maintained at 1.6 nights.
In addition, there were 1.5 million tour group customers in the first three quarters of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 100%. Mainland China’s group tour arrivals rose by 91% to 1.3 million, while international group tour arrivals increased by 280% to 142,000, including 58,000 arrivals from South Korea.
September saw 134,000 tour group arrivals, a year-on-year decrease of 0.5%, including a 4.4% decline in those from mainland China to 117,000.
