Macau’s fourth sea bridge will open to traffic on 1 October, the day of China’s National Day, with the government expecting the new bridge to reduce travelling time between Taipa and the Macau Peninsula.
The fourth bridge, known as the “Macau Bridge”, began construction in March 2020 and took nearly four years to complete. Its total length is about 3.1 kilometres of which the sea-crossing section is 2.9 km. The bridge has eight lanes in both directions, with the middle two lanes reserved for motorcycles.
The Macau Bridge starts from the east side of Macau New Reclamation A and the artificial island of the HZMB Boundary Crossing Facilities and ends at Macau New Reclamation E1.
Upon the commissioning of the Macau Bridge, the Government anticipates that the traffic route between Cotai and the artificial islands of the HZMB Boundary Crossing Facilities will be transferred from the Friendship Bridge, and the new route will be shorter than the Friendship Bridge by about 3 kilometres, saving between three and six minutes in journey time and sharing about 30% of the peak hour traffic flow of the Friendship Bridge.
