Macau International Airport (MIA) said Thursday that it handled 5.15 million passengers in 2023, equivalent to 54% of 2019 levels.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, MIA’s passenger volume decreased significantly between 2020 and 2022 before starting its recovery after international borders reopened on 8 January 2023.
The latest figures released by MIA show that 5.15 million passengers and 42,504 flight movements in 2023, with a daily average of about 14,000 passengers and 116 flight movements.
MIA is currently served by 25 airlines, providing flights to 48 destinations in mainland China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia.
Passengers from mainland China accounted for 58% of the total passenger traffic, while passengers from Taiwan accounted for 15% and those from Southeast and Northeast Asia 27% of the total passenger traffic.
According to MIA, in 2024, in line with the direction of the Macau SAR Government’s tourism development, MIA will consolidate the passenger source market in mainland China while exploring more international markets in partnership with airlines.
“In order to increase the number of flights for passengers from Southeast and Northeast Asia, MIA will step up tourism promotion with foreign airlines to attract more overseas international travelers to Macau,” it said.
