The Macau government has revealed that the franchise of Air Macau Limited will be renewed until the new Civil Aviation Law comes into effect.
The government announced in June that it would enact a new Civil Aviation Law to open up the air transport market, with the franchise of Air Macau Limited due to end on 31 December this year.
However, as the Civil Aviation Law is currently under scrutiny by the Macau Legislative Assembly, the Government announced on Monday that the franchise contract of Air Macau Limited will be extended for a period of three years or until the Civil Aviation Law comes into effect.
The government pointed out that “before the new law is enacted, the existing aviation operation system must be maintained so that Air Macau Limited can continue to provide uninterrupted flight services to Macau residents and visitors to Macau.
“The extension of Air Macau Limited’s franchise contract will not prevent foreign airlines from operating flights to Macau.”
The government also outlined its expectation that Macau’s aviation industry will continue to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The airport franchisee is actively working to attract domestic and overseas airlines to operate flights to Macau through its marketing strategy,” it said.
Air Macau Limited’s franchise has operated in Macau for 25 years and was due to end in November 2020, but as Macau was experiencing the pandemic at the time, the franchise was extended for three years until 31 December this year.
