MGM China has revealed it will support the government’s revitalization plan for the A-Ma district, which it plans to turn into a cultural and creative area.
Supporting such revitalization projects of Macau’s historical districts formed part of negotiations for new gaming concessions last year, with all six concessionaires pledging to do their part for the community.
MGM held a press conference alongside the Macau government on Tuesday at which Chairperson and Executive Director, Pansy Ho, said the company is committed to increasing its investment in Macau to promote the development of non-gaming elements, of which A-Ma is one.
“Starting this year, MGM will invest resources, experience and creativity into the A-Ma revitalization project and will spread it to the Macau community,” she said.
“We hope to revitalize the A-Ma area into a cultural and creative park, where more cultural elements will be added. Macau’s transportation support will also strengthen the connection of A-Ma.
“In last year’s tender, urban revitalization was one of the indicators and the tender already had a revitalization plan for A-Ma.
“At that time, we didn’t know how big the revitalization would be, but we had already done some research and analysis, and we hoped to develop A-Ma into a cultural and creative district.
“However, in terms of budget, we have to assess how much resources to put in, because there are 13 buildings in the project and the amount of resources to be put in each of them is different.”
According to preliminary information released, the revitalization area of A-Ma is about 35,000 square meters, with the 13 buildings occupying 6,000 square meters.
Ms Ho explained that MGM has already discussed the project with government departments and believes that the new buildings can be planned and completed next year.
