Macau International Airport (MIA) handled more than 550,000 passengers and 4,000 flights in July, an increase of 28% and 10% respectively over June. Among them, international passengers accounted for 29% of total passenger numbers.

According to details released by MIA on Monday, the airport’s average daily passenger arrivals and departures amounted to 17,000 in July, back to 58% of 2019 levels, with average flight movements of 129 recovering to 60%.

Passengers from mainland China accounted for 53% of the total number of passengers, with those from Taiwan accounting for 18%.

Passenger traffic and flight movements are expected to continue to recover steadily during the summer vacation period in August.

The airport pointed out that in line with the direction of the Macau SAR Government’s tourism development, it has stepped up the promotion of medium and long-haul routes such as Indonesia in order to attract more international travelers to Macau and promote economic exchanges.

MGTO Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong said last Friday that visitor arrivals in July had recovered to about 78% of pre-quarantine levels, that visitor numbers had risen in the first three days of August, and that the annual arrivals for this year were likely to exceed 24 million.

He added that the average daily number of visitor arrivals to Macau in July was about 89,000, with more than 2.7 million arrivals for the whole month. The average daily number of visitor arrivals for the first three days of August was more than 93,000.

The overall share of international arrivals has also been rising slowly.

“In the second half of the year, the MGTO will step up online and offline promotions for international visitors, including visits to Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea,” he said.
