The Macau government has included in its development plan for concessionaires a large revitalization project for the south coast of Macau peninsula, located close to Sands Macau, MGM Macau and Wynn Macau.
The Macao Peninsula South Coastal Green Corridor Project was listed as part of 12 key development projects for the integrated tourism and leisure industry under the government’s “Development plan for the appropriate diversification of the economy (2024 – 2028)”, announced Friday, and comprises an area between the west of the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge and the Gate of Understanding. It has a total area of 54,000 square meters and a length of about 1,300 meters.
In relation to this project, the government said it aimed to “build a leisure and diversified waterfront green corridor, and to construct cycling trails and waterfront walkways along the waterfront, linking up a number of different functional districts so as to provide a diversified leisure experience for the residents and tourists.”
Under the new gaming concessions awarded in December, Macau’s six concessionaires are required to support the development and revitalization of community areas, however this is the first time the government has included a specific large-scale project in the development plan for the integrated tourism and leisure industry.
It has not yet been revealed if there is any specific relationship between this project and a single concessionaire, or for which part of the project a concessionaire or concessionaires will be responsible.
The 12 key projects under the new five-year plan are:
- Develop international visitor source markets and promote diversification of tourist sources
- Promote diversification of tourism products
- Promote culinary tourism and deepen the construction of the “City of Gastronomy”
- Continue to promote the development of Macau’s cultural and creative brands
