Macau welcome a total of 491,968 visitors during the five-day “May Day” Golden Week holiday period, comfortably exceeding market expectations. Representatives of the tourism industry also told IAG that hotel occupancy rates exceeded 90% in the first two days of Golden Week.
The “May Day” Golden Week in mainland China began last Saturday and concluded on Wednesday, with the total number of visitors to Macau reaching 109,196 on Saturday before climbing to 133,911 on Sunday 110,823 on Monday. Tuesday’s figure dropped back to 84,740 before the holiday concluded with 53,298 visitor arrivals on Wednesday.
Speaking with IAG, President of the Macau Travel Industry Council, Andy Wu, said the May Day, also known as Labour Day, holiday period “exceeded expectations, breaking the record of arrivals since the pandemic.”
The Macao Government Tourism Office had previously said it hoped to average 70,000 visitor arrivals per day during Golden Week, but the final average was much higher at 98,394.
Wu continued, “The hotel occupancy rate exceeded 90% last weekend, and the hotel capacity is gradually improving, with only about 5% of hotel rooms unable to operate due to manpower shortages.”
Because of high prices of tour groups during the May Day Golden Week, the number of tours did not increase during Golden Week although that is expected to change from today. It is estimated that visitor arrivals will average 60,000 to 70,000 per day in the short-term.
