Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ao Ieong U, told the Legislative Assembly (AL) on Tuesday that developing local talent across multiple fields of endeavor was part of concessionaires’ commitment in signing new 10-year gaming concessions late last year. This, she added, includes work in the field of sports, arts, cultural and creative industries, and film and television.
Ao’s comments follow concerns raised by some AL members over the future development of local Macau talent. Ao explained that in signing new contracts with concessionaires, the government had proposed to them a plan for the nurturing of such talent.
“They have to train local sports talents, collaborate with the arts and cultural and creative sectors in Macau, and support film and television productions,” she said. “Whether it is staff training or on-the-job training, the Education and Youth Development Bureau has also signed agreements with concessionaires and they will provide training opportunities [to Macau residents].
“When the government enters into gaming contract agreements with concessionaires, they are required to provide opportunities for the local industry.”
Ao also noted that some concessionaires have outlined plans for the revitalization of some of Macau’s older areas, including Avenida do Conselheiro and the Inner Harbour between piers 14 and 16.
Regarding investment in non-gaming elements, key points outlined in the concession contracts included MICE, entertainment, sports, ats and culture, health-based tourism, gastronomy, themed amusements, community tourism, marine tourism and boosting international visitation.
