The Hong Kong Jockey Club has revealed the Dubai World Cup, held at Dubai’s Meydan Racecourse on Saturday, became World Pool’s highest turnover race of 2023 so far after generating HK$54.5 million (US$6.9 million) in turnover.
The entire eight-race card also saw commingled turnover hit HK$315.2 million (US$40.2 million), representing a HK$33.6 million (US$4.3 million) increase over 2022 figures.
World Pool is a version of international commingling, combining major race meets racing from around the globe with the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s betting operation. This, HKJC said, “boasts the deepest and most liquid pari-mutuel pools on the planet.”
The two races preceding the Dubai World Cup also generated strong turnover with HK$46.0 million (US$5.9 million) on the G1 Dubai Turf and HK$46.5 million (US$5.9 million) on the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic.
Japan’s Ushba Tesoro proved too strong for the field in winning the feature race.
The HK$54.5 million bet on the Dubai World Cup from pari-mutuel organizations in over 20 countries exceeded the HK$48.4 million (US$6.2 million) bet on the Saudi Cup in February and comes after the HKJC recently recorded its highest day of betting turnover since 1997 in a Chinese New Year meet at Sha Tin.
