The hotel occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels jumped by 25.4 percentage points year-on-year to 74.0% in January, aided by the removal of most border restrictions from 8 January and the Chinese New Year holiday period.
According to figures from the Macao Government Tourism Office, which takes into account occupancy rates at 43 hotels rated 3 stars and above, January’s occupancy rate was improved from just 48.7% in January 2022 and from 42.8% in December.
The occupancy rate of 5-star hotels in January improved by 27.8 percentage points over January 2022 to 73.9%, of 4-star hotels by 11.7 percentage points to 70.1% and of 3-star hotels by 26.8 percentage points to 79.0%.
Room rates also climbed substantially, from an average of MOP$833 a year earlier to MOP$1,181, representing a 41.8% improvement.
This included average room rates of MOP$1,371 in 5-star hotels, MOP$806 in 4-star hotels and MOP$871 in 3-star hotels.
The improved hotel occupancy and room rates comes after the MGTO reported a 259% sequential increase in visitor arrivals in January to almost 1.4 million.
