Vietnamese authorities have broken up an online gambling ring that they say collected bets totalling VND30 trillion (US$1.2 billion) over the past three years.

According to a report by VN Express, officers from the Ministry of Public Security raided 15 locations in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring Dong Nai Province on Tuesday, arresting 14 people on suspicion of gambling and organizing gambling.

It is believed that several Vietnamese living in Cambodia ran the operation while a number of managers based in Ho Chi Minh City oversaw betting accounts and managed the network across multiple cities and provinces.

Betting was primarily conducted on football, cockfighting and lottery games, the report said, with bets often reaching VND100 billion (US$4 million) a week

The case comes after another online football betting ring worth over VND1 trillion ($40.3 million) was busted in northern Vietnam last week ahead of the start of the World Cup in Qatar.
