Wynn Macau Limited has issued a brief filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange announcing that Mr Ciarán Carruthers, Chief Operating Officer of Wynn Macau Resort, will be leaving the company on 30 September 2022.
Carruthers departure comes in the wake of Wynn’s announcement yesterday afternoon of the departure of his boss and Wynn Macau Limited President, Ian Michael Coughlan, effective 28 February 2023.
A much-liked figure in Macau, 33-year industry veteran Carruthers has been in leadership roles in Macau integrated resorts for the past 20 years.
Beginning his Macau career at Galaxy Entertainment Group in September 2002, Carruthers was Chief Operating Officer of Galaxy’s first property, Waldo casino, from its July 2004 opening, and then went on to become COO of Galaxy’s “City Clubs” – a quartet of Waldo, Rio, President and Grand Waldo (now Broadway). This was followed by three years in the same role at Galaxy’s then-flagship property StarWorld, which opened in October 2006.
He left Galaxy in 2009 to pursue consulting work in the industry. His clients included Sands China Limited, and this ultimately led to his appointment as SVP & Director Operations Venetian Resort and Plaza Casino from 2013 to 2016, before joining Wynn as Chief Operating Officer of Wynn Macau Resort from January 2017 until now.
Carruthers departure, 20 years to the month after beginning his career in Macau, will leave a significant hole at Wynn Macau. When coupled with the departure of Ian Michael Coughlan, that significant hole becomes a gaping void. Wynn Macau Limited CEO Craig Billings will need to rely on Vice Chairman Linda Chen and the depth of talent amongst the existing senior leadership group to keep the Wynn Macau Limited ship on course.
UPDATE: It was revealed shortly after this article was published that Carruthers has been appointed CEO of Australia’s Crown Resorts.
