The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses reached 54.7% in December, up 8.2 percentage points compared with November and 1.6 percentage points better off than the same month in 2020.
The increase reflects growing visitation for the month, with the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) having previously announced a 2.4% sequential and 24.5% year-on-year rise in visitor arrivals in December 2021 to 820,870.
The rate for 3-star hotels was 66.2% while 4-star and 5-star hotels exceeded 50%, DSEC said.
The total number of guests in Macau’s hotels and guesthouses in December rose by 12.1% year-on-year to 650,000, including 531,000 mainland Chinese guests and 85,000 locals. The average length of stay of guests grew by 0.1 nights year-on-year to 1.7 nights.
For 2021 as a whole, the average occupancy rate of Macau hotels and guesthouses was 50.0%, an increase of 21.4 percentage points over 2020. The number of guests grew by 71.0% year-on-year to 6,624,000 including a 94.9% increase in mainland Chinese guests to 5,380,000. Local guests rose by 41.7% to 892,000.
