Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has extended a General Community Quarantine (GCQ) classification for the National Capital Region, comprising Metro Manila and surrounding areas, until 15 June.
Under GCQ, mass gatherings are mostly banned, public transport services restricted and food and beverage outlets limited to 50% seating capacity. Outdoor tourist spots can operate at 30% capacity while entertainment facilities such as internet cafes, amusement parks plus MICE facilities are not allowed to open at all.
Casinos are also closed to the public, although Manila’s integrated resorts are permitted to welcome invited guests.
As reported by IAG on Monday, 31 May 2021, the Philippines government has granted permission for 13 hotels located in the NCR, including hotels at all four Manila IRs – City of Dreams Manila, Okada Manila, Resorts World Manila and Solaire Resort & Casino – to operate at full capacity and without requiring a negative COVID-19 test from guests.
GCQ is two levels below the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) measures put in place in late March as COVID-19 infections spiked again to more than 15,000 a day, and one level below Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ).
Duterte said Monday it was important to retain GCQ to avoid residents in the NCR becoming complacent.
The government has gradually eased restrictions despite daily infections still sitting at 6,684 as of Monday, the majority in the NCR.
