Macau’s gaming concessionaires have begun launching internal vaccination drives aimed at boosting the rate of vaccination among its employees.
The move comes after recent meetings between Macau gaming operators and the Health Bureau last week to address lower than anticipated vaccination rates across the SAR, with local news channel TDM reporting that just over 85,700 people had received their first dose and less than 50,000 or 7.8% of the population both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
In response, at least two concessionaires have released details of their internal programs in recent days, with Melco Resorts & Entertainment putting MOP$16 million (US$2 million) towards a special “Get the Jab” immunity incentive program. Under the program, all fully vaccinated employees will receive MOP$1,000 each, and once Melco reaches its target immunity level up to six employees could win MOP$1 million each.
Melco said reaching immunity is now established as a key company objective, with education seminars also planned in conjunction with the Macau Health Bureau and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
“The health and safety of Melco colleagues, guests and community is a top priority,” said Melco Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho.
“Through the efforts of the government, we are fortunate that vaccines are readily available. Our commitment to creating a safe environment and contributing to the government’s goal of achieving herd immunity is demonstrated by our resources dedicated to the immunity incentive program.”
MGM China has also announced its own vaccine initiative, including a seminar for employees held at MGM Cotai last week titled, “Post-pandemic Era: The Road to COVID-19 Vaccine.”
The seminar was hosted by Dr Tai Wa Hou who introduced the two types of COVID-19 vaccines available in Macau and explained how they work while allaying concerns around perceived dangers.
“The coronavirus has struck the world for more than a year, and the pandemic situations in some countries and regions are still fluctuating,” Dr Tai said.
“Although Macau is currently a low-risk area, we should remain vigilant and understand that getting vaccinated is the most effective and long-lasting protection against the pandemic.
“I hope that this seminar will allow participants to fully realize the efficacy and safety of each vaccine, so they can make the best decision for themselves. The higher the vaccination rate among the public, the stronger the herd immunity. And this will also facilitate the resumption of our normal lives.”
As reported by TDM, the Macau government last week began easing some testing requirements for vaccinated individuals taking part in in events such as festivals, concerts, parades and sporting competitions.
