The Hong Kong Jockey Club has provided HK$500 million worth of funding for development of a new tower at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
The donation, approved by the The HKJC’s Charities Trust, will see the Jockey Club One Health Tower built to serve as an education and research base for veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences. A ceremony to mark the commencement of structural works was held on Tuesday.
The Jockey Club One Health Tower will be home to the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, The HKJC said, which will seek to further prevent and control infectious diseases through multidisciplinary collaboration.
It will stand 15-storeys high with floor space of over 24,000 square meters and be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research. There will also be a 1,600-seat multi-function auditorium and an all-weather indoor track which will be connected to the CityU hillside trail. The facility is expected to open in 2023.
“During this COVID-19 pandemic, the Club has funded a billion Hong Kong dollars for immediate relief measures and resilience building for the society,” said Chairman Philip Chen. “With this new building and College, I am sure that together we can make Hong Kong more prepared for future crises and public health concerns.”
