The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses reached 53.1% in December, a 9.1 percentage point improvement over the previous month but down 38.9 percentage points compared with the same month a year earlier.
The numbers represented a 52.5% decline in the total guests in December 2020 to 579,000, including a 40.0% fall in those from mainland China to 492,000, although local guest numbers grew 15.7% to 61,000. The average length of stay of guests increased by 0.1 nights year-on-year to 1.6 nights.
For all of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms dropped 62.2 percentage points to just 28.6%. Guests from mainland China fell by 71.9% year-on-year to 2,760,000, comprising 71.2% of total, while local guest numbers rose by 3.2% to 630,000. The average length of stay improved by 0.2 nights year-on-year to 1.7 nights.
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) also that the number of hotels and guesthouses in Macau fell by three year-on-year to 120 in December, with the number of available guest rooms down 8.2% to 35,000.
