Any operator selected to partner Nagasaki prefecture in its bid to develop an integrated resort will be required to contribute around JPY 14.7 billion (US$141 million) to improve traffic infrastructure near the proposed IR site.

The issue of Nagasaki’s IR was discussed at a city council special committee of Sasebo city on Tuesday, where it was proposed that the operator bear the cost for associated infrastructure improvements near Huis Ten Bosch.

Nagasaki prefecture started its IR operator recruitment on 7 January and intends to select an operator in August once there has been a primary and secondary screening and an integrity survey.

According to the operator recruitment guidelines published by the prefecture, the operator will bear part of the costs relating to measures such as problem gambling, in addition to the development of the surrounding area, MICE and the development of transportation infrastructure.

The national government has set a goal to boost foreign tourist arrivals into Japan to 60 million by 2030 and Nagasaki hopes to contribute to this target with the revitalization of the local area through an IR.
