The Macau SAR Government has announced a 14-day quarantine requirement for all arrivals who have been to Pitong Town (Pitong Street) in Chengdu of Sichuan Province within the past 14 days after several cases of COVID-19 were detected in the city.
Chengdu reported two cases who were infected with the virus on Monday, followed by another four positive tests who had been close contacts of the original duo on Tuesday. All have been quarantined and are receiving treatment in hospital.
The Sichuan authority has declared the city will enter “wartime mode,” in an attempt to quickly eliminate the risk of further spread, with over 250,000 people in Chengdu having already undergone virus tests by Tuesday night.
Since the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) to Macau was resumed in stages from August, Macau has been quick to respond to COVID-19 outbreaks in mainland China by imposing quarantine measures on arrivals who have been to affected areas. Until Tuesday, only people who had been to specific areas in Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Shanghai and Chengdu needed to enter quarantine upon arrival.
