The Tokyo District Court made the decision on Wednesday to deny the bail request of Tsukasa Akimoto, 48, who has been charged with bribery and violation of the Organized Crime Law (acquisition of witnesses) in an integrated resort corruption case.
According to Kyodo News, his lawyer had made the request on 12 October.
Akimoto was released on bail earlier this year after being charged with bribery but was arrested again and detained in August on suspicion of being involved in buying off witnesses and trying to entice them to commit perjury in court.
Four of his supporters who were arrested as part of the same case have already been released on bail.
The denial of bail comes after two advisors to Chinese online lottery and sports betting company 500.com were this week sentenced to suspended jail sentences by the Tokyo District Court.
They stood accused of offering bribes to Akimoto totaling approximately JPY7.6 million (US$72,000) between September 2017 and February 2018, including JPY3 million (US$28,500) in cash when he was deputy minister for 500.com had been looking to develop an IR in either Hokkaido or Okinawa at the time.
