New Zealand’s SkyCity Entertainment Group will resume full and unrestricted operations from today after the government dropped the nation’s COVID-19 Alert Level down to Level 1, effectively removing all restrictions except border restrictions.
New Zealand has now gone more than two weeks without registering any new coronavirus cases and has no active cases remaining, prompting Prime Minister Jacinda Adern to announce the lifting of restrictions.
As a result, SkyCity’s New Zealand casinos in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington will be among the first in the world to resume full operations, with the company announcing early Tuesday it was no longer required to implement social distancing measures on its gaming floors or elsewhere.
“Electronic gaming machines and gaming tables will operate as usual without physical distancing requirements – in particular the gaming ‘zones’ implemented at Alert Level 2 will be removed and members of the public will be able to return to the SkyCity casinos,” it said. Events and promotions will also recommence.
Despite the full reopening, SkyCity noted in a filing last week that it expects its business to be domestically focused for the foreseeable future, with the company currently embarking on an employee reduction scheme that is expected to reduce costs by around NZ$50 million per year.
