US tribal casino operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment has announced that it has partnered with Greek construction giant GEK Terna to bid for the right to develop a casino resort in Athens.
The casino is set to form part of a larger €8 billion integrated resort to be built by Lamda Development, which will be backed by Chinese and Gulf investors, on the site of the former Ellinikon International Airport. The development will include luxury residences, hotels, a yachting marina, entertainment facilities, retail, F&B and MICE as well as the casino complex.
The Hellenic Gaming Commission called for tenders in February, with all bids set at a minimum of €30 million for a 30-year casino license. While the Commission has stated it has received widespread interest, the Mohegan-GEK Terna bid is the first to go public.
Mohegan’s interest continues a spate of recent international expansion initiatives, including its first foray into Asia via Korean integrated resort Inspire, which is soon to break ground in Incheon, while the company is also pursuing a regional Japan IR license in Hokkaido.
