A poll conducted by Kyodo News over the weekend following passage of the IR Implementation Bill through the Japanese Diet on Friday found that almost 65% of respondents remain opposed to its enactment.
According to the telephone poll, 64.8% of people questioned said they opposed passage of the bill with just 27.6% showing support. The long-awaited IR bill sets out the basic ground rules for Japan’s first integrated resorts including the provision for three separate locations across the country.
Despite the ruling Liberal Democratic Party having pushed hard for casino resorts in order to boost tourism to Japan, the concept has been a controversial one due to widespread public opposition – largely on the back of negative media coverage.
As well as bidding for an IR license, one of the enormous tasks facing potential IR candidates will be to help sway public opinion – a task they have been largely reluctant to take on so far.
