A prominent member of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party says at least one Japan casino license should be granted to a regional jurisdiction, stating that a regional integrated resort is the best way to stimulate the local economy.
Member of the House of Councillors of the LDP Seiko Hashimoto – a former speed skater and track cyclist who represented Japan in seven Olympics – told a session of the Japan Gaming Congress on Thursday that a regional property should form a key aspect of the government’s plans to bring more tourist dollars into the country. She also singled out Hokkaido as the perfect location to create a unique, world class entertainment attraction.
“I think having a regional casino is very important,” she said.
“I grew up in Hokkaido and I know what it has to offer in terms of the ice and the snow, the natural attractions it has throughout the year. But I also understand the benefits an IR can bring to the local economy.
“An IR is the perfect way to invigorate the economy of the regional centers.”
On a lighter note, Hashimoto also revealed that casinos regularly operate in the athletes’ village at the Olympic Games.
“I represented Japan in seven Olympics and have attended 16 Olympic Games, and we would often have a casino in the athletes’ village,” she said. “So I’m used to being around a casino and I understand the value they can bring.”
