Former Crown Resorts CEO Rowen Craigie, who stepped down from the role in February following the arrest of 19 employees in China late last year, has been appointed to the board of Racing Victoria.
Mr Craigie is one of five new directors appointed by Victorian state racing minister Martin Pakula to oversee the powerful Australian racing body, which includes former Toll Holdings Managing Director Brian Kruger as Chairman.
Also on the board are fellow newcomers Kate Joel, Ross Lanyon and Sharon McCrohan – all of them among recommendations of an advisory panel comprising members of various Victorian racing bodies – while Mike Hirst, Greg Nichols and Michael Andrew retain their positions. The board will officially start from 9 October.
Mr Craigie stepped down earlier this year amid a major corporate restructure at Crown following the China arrests, with John Alexander subsequently stepping into his role and controlling shareholder James Packer announcing his intention to return to the Crown board as the company refocuses its energies on its Australia business.
It was revealed last week that Mr Craigie received a payout of around AU$10 million upon leaving Crown Resorts, including AU$3.14 million in severance pay, AU$3.14 million in notice pay and AU$3 million worth of shares.
“I congratulate each of the new directors on their appointment to the board and I look forward to their contribution to advance the interests of the Victorian racing industry,” said Pakula.
“The new appointments will ensure that the Board has stability and continuity as we head into the Spring Carnival. I also thank the outgoing members for their substantial contribution to the Racing Victoria Board and the industry.”
