Police are hunting for a woman suspected of running a gambling racket on board cruise vessels that was busted last year.

Nguyen Thi Hanh, 51, allegedly operated cruises from Quang Ninh Province in the far north to Phu Quoc Island with 40-50 gamblers aboard.

Each game of cards would involve a kitty of US$1,000-3,000.

Police broke up the operation last December and arrested two men, Nguyen Trieu Duc and Nguyen Van Binh.

They then apprehended two others, Pham Nhu Khoa and Nguyen Chi Thanh, but Hanh eluded them.

In the last two months of 2008, Hanh and the four men earned over VND30 billion ($1.72 million) from the gambling, they said.

Hanh has convictions for gambling and drug trafficking, and has been considered one of the gambling kingpins in the north since 2000.

She was also allegedly connected with executed gang boss Nam Cam and several of his notorious henchmen like Thang Tai Dau, who was involved with betting gangs that controlled soccer players, coaches, and referees.

The police did not say which vessels were involved in the racket or how their owners were related to the gang.
