A 44-year-old worker from Bangladesh was killed Sunday after being struck when a steel structure collapsed on a worksite at Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).
According to local media reports, the accident took place on the site of the former Maritime Experiential Museum, which is currently closed as part of the expansion of RWS’s S.E.A. Aquarium. The structure is said to have collapsed during lifting operations, with the man pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after they were called to the scene around 8am.
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower told The Straits Times that the contractor had been ordered to halt all lifting work.
“As a general safety measure, lifting equipment and supporting structures must be properly designed, installed and inspected,” it said, noting that the accident is not being treated as suspicious.
“The contractor and RWS are supporting the authorities in their investigation.”
The expansion of the the S.E.A. Aquarium, which will when complete triple in size and be rebranded as the Singapore Oceanarium, forms part of a larger SG$6.8 billion (US$5 billion) RWS 2.0 expansion which will add around 700 hotel keys and form what Genting Singapore describes as a “monumental gateway to RWS and the new Greater Southern Waterfront precinct.”
RWS 2.0 will also see Universal Studios Singapore updated with a new immersive themed zone, Illumination’s Minion Land, while the main outdoor Forum area will also be transformed, with this, Minion Land and the Singapore Oceanarium expected to soft open in early 2025.
The company previously revealed it was also upgrading around 1,200 hotel rooms across three of its hotels, formerly the Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and Festive Hotel.
