The first ever World Poker Tour main tour stop to be held in Asia has been run and won, with Germany’s Konstantin Held etching his name in the record books at WPT Cambodia.
Held at NagaWorld in Phnom Penh, WPT Cambodia attracted a Main Event field of 760 players, with Held narrowly edging Australian tournament pro Josh McCully to take home the US$361,310 first prize. He also won a US$10,400 seat to the 2024 WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas for his efforts.
“WPT Cambodia was a special festival,” said WPT CEO Adam Pliska.
“Not only did it open the 2024 season, but it also marked the first time the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup was presented in Southeast Asia. Konstantin will forever be the first player to claim a WPT Champions Club title in the region.”
The WPT has been aggressively expanding into Asia, having hosted events in Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, India and Cambodia last year.
It also held two events in Australia including the WPT Australia main tour stop, which debuted in September 2022 at The Star Gold Coast.
Pliska recently told IAG the WPT is exploring options to potentially hold an event in Macau in the future.
