Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture says the government might consider organizing some music concerts on the site of the Macau Jockey Club’s race course in future after receiving noise complaints during a weekend event in Taipa.
The complaints were received during Korean boy band Seventeen’s concert at Taipa Olympic Sports Centre on Sunday, with the venue located in close proximity to housing.
Speaking to local media on Monday, Elsie Ao Ieong revealed the government would set up an inter-departmental group to conduct a review of the concert and would study the format of similar concerts held outside of Macau’s integrated resorts in the future.
“If the concerts were held in the resorts of the concessionaires, it would be the simplest for the government and [concert contractors], but the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) would not be able to benefit from these concerts,” she said.
“The government will study the possibility of organizing concerts in locations that are either close to or far from residential areas, and if the racecourse and the Macau East Asian Games Dome have the conditions, they would also be considered for organizing concerts.”
As reported by Inside Asian Gaming, the Macau Jockey Club will cease all horse racing activities from 1 April due to mounting debts, and the Macau government has confirmed it will not resume the sport in the future. The site of the existing race course will revert back to the government after 1 April but no plans for its future use have been revealed other than a promise that more gaming facilities are not an option.
According to organizers, Seventeen’s Macau concerts on Saturday and Sunday attracted almost 40,000 fans.
On Saturday and Sunday, the famous Korean group “Seventeen” held concerts in Macau at the Taipa Olympic Sports Centre. According to the organizer, the concert attracted nearly 40,000 people which also created some problems for nearby residential areas.
In response, the government temporarily rerouted some traffic lanes in the area and closed one of its light rail stations.
