China’s lotteries recorded sales of RMB 50.5 billion (US$7.09 billion) in November, down 2.5% year-on-year according to information from the Ministry of Finance.

The decrease was mainly due to a higher base during the same period in 2022, the Ministry explained, which was driven by the 2022 Football World Cup. As such, the China Sports Lottery suffered a 13.3% year-on-year decline in sales to RMB 33.6 billion (US$4.72 billion), while the Welfare Lottery grew by 29.5% to RMB16.9 billion (US$2.36 billion).

By categorization, digital lottery sales in November grew by 13.3% year-on-year to RMB 16.4 billion (US$2.29 billion), sales of instant lotteries by 172% to RMB 10.6 billion (US$1.48 billion), and sales of keno by 43.5% to RMB 3.4 billion (US$476 million). Sales of “competitive guessing lotteries” declined by 35.2% to RMB 20.1 billion (US$2.81 billion).

Regionally, lottery ticket sales in Guangdong, Xinjiang, Beijing and Hunan posted significant increases, up RMB 836 million (US$117 million), RMB 408 million (US$57 million), RMB 204 million (US$28.5 million) and RMB 189 million (US$26.4 million) respectively compared with the same month in 2022.

Jiangsu, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Jilin recorded decreases of RMB 538 million (US$75.2 million), RMB 342 million (US$47.8 million), RMB 295 million (US$332.4 million) and RMB 265 million (US$37.1 million) respectively.

From January to November, lottery sales totaled RMB 526.4 billion (US$73.6 billion), an increase of 45.1%, compared with the same period in 2022. This included Welfare Lottery sales of RMB 177.0 billion (US$24.8 billion), up 29.8%, while the Sports Lottery grew by 54.3% to RMB 349.4 billion (US$48.9 billion).
