Macau’s total visitor arrivals for all of 2023 reached 28.23 million, according to provisional figures released by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), with average daily arrivals of 77,000. This represents recovery to around 70% of 2019 levels.
The final 2023 figure was aided by a strong finish to the year, with a daily average of 95,445 in December representing around 96% of December 2019 arrivals. This included 175,030 visitor arrivals on 31 December, the highest single-day number since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic almost four years ago.
Visitor arrivals in 2023 were dominated by those from mainland China, which reached 94.2% of 2019 levels in December. International arrivals recovered from 10.1% of 2019 levels in January to 94.4% in December, including 11,258 on 30 December.
The MGTO added that hotel occupancy reached 82.3% in December based on early estimates, versus 2023’s high of 89.4% recorded in July. The number of hotel guests in December exceeded the pre-epidemic level, reaching 103.5% of the 2019 number.
The MGTO said it will continue to promote Macau tourism internationally.
“In January 2024, Air Macau will continue to operate flights between Macau and Kuala Lumpur, enhancing the convenience of international visitors to Macau and further enriching Macau’s visitor mix,” it said.
