Macau’s hotel occupancy rate grew by 44.6 percentage points year-on-year to 78.9% in May, with the occupancy rate of three-star hotels reaching 81% and five-star hotels reaching 79%. The figure was, however, slightly down on April when the hotel occupancy rate was 79.8%.
According to the Statistics and Census Service, there were a total of 130 hotel establishments providing accommodation services in May, an increase of nine over the same month in 2022. The number of people staying in Macau’s hotels grew by 140% year-on-year to 1,104,000, slightly higher than April’s 1,101,000. Of these, 793,000 were from mainland China, representing an increase of 130% year-on-year.
There were also with 199,000 guests from Hong Kong, up 820%, and 17,000 guests from Taiwan, up 360%. The number of local guests fell by 51.8% to 42,000.
The average length of stay increased by 0.1 nights to 1.6 nights.
In terms of foreign visitation, the leading contributors were South Korea with 11,400 hotel guests and Japan with 4,500.
Of the total 1,104,000 guests, 590,000 chose to stay in 5-star hotels, providing for an occupancy rate of 79%, while the number of 3-star guests was around 174,000, with an occupancy rate of 81%.
The average occupancy rate for hotel establishments for the first five months of 2023 increased by 39.4 percentage points year-on-year to 76.7%, while the total number of guests reached 4,998,000.
Macau welcomed 79,000 arrivals as part of group tours in May, taking the total since the start of the year to 280,000.
