AirAsia has resumed flights to and from Macau, with the airline’s first Macau flight in three years touching down at Macau International Airport on Tuesday.
According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the arrival of Flight AK186 from Kuala Lumpur signals the resumption of tourism between Macau and Malaysia as airlines continue to resume international routes to and from the SAR.
Malaysia was the seventh largest source tourism market to Macau in 2019 with 206,277 visitor arrivals – ranking ahead of the United States, Indonesia and Thailand.
The return of the AirAsia route “is set to bring a broader range of international visitors to Macau and contribute to tourism market diversification,” the MGTO said in a statement.
“Following the lifting of border restrictions, the MGTO maintains close collaboration with industry partners, hoping that more carriers will restart and provide routes to Macau.”
The MGTO added that some additional new routes are already set to resume in the coming weeks, including Bankgok to Macau from 18 February and between the Philippines and Macau from 2 March.
