Macau’s Public Prosecutions Office (MP) has formally charged the former CEO of leading junket Tak Chun Group and former Chairman of Macau Legend Development, Levo Chan.
He faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Chan was arrested by Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) in January and has been detained in Coloane Prison ever since, accused of being involved in criminal organization, illegal gambling including online gambling and “betting under the table” (known as “賭枱底” in Chinese), and money laundering.
The MP revealed Friday it has completed its investigation of Chan’s case and has issued an indictment to prosecute him. A total of nine people were charged by the MP in the same case but Chan was the only one detained in prison.
In January, the PJ announced that Chan’s case was directly linked to the one which led to the arrest and detainment without bail in late November of Suncity CEO Alvin Chau. Suncity subsequently announced the cessation of its junket business in mid-December.
Although the group Chan was connected to is not the same as Suncity, the PJ said at the time it had obtained sufficient information to show that the groups worked together.
The MP completed its investigation into Chau on 26 May in a case involving a total of 21 people. The case, linked to HK$800 billion in alleged illegal gambling funds, will go to trial on 2 September.
