A new wave of COVID-19 has forced authorities in Guangzhou city, Guangdong Province, into action after 26 cases of the virus – including 21 asymptomatic infections – were detected since 21 May. All have been confirmed as Indian variants.

The Guangzhou government has issued a requirement for all residents of Yuexiu and Haizhu districts to receive a virus test, while individuals leaving Guangzhou must show a negative virus test result obtained within the previous 72 hours.

Shenzhen city has also confirmed 11 locally acquired infections in Yantian district, all cases confirmed as UK variants.

Macau announced late last week that it had learnt of a 59-year-old local resident – a City of Dreams shuttle bus driver – who had come into contact with an asymptomatic infection case in Qingyuan city on 23 May, although he stayed three meters away and both wore masks. The driver has since returned a negative test result and has been quarantined for 14-days at a hospital in Macau.

Zhuhai and Macau are now both on alert for the latest COVID-19 developments in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and the Zhuhai government has installed more crowd control barriers in front of the Gongbei Border in order to reroute passenger flow and force travellers to maintain social distance.

As of 30 May, Macau requires individuals who have been to any of the following areas in mainland China to quarantine for 14 days.
