Zhuhai has announced a slight easing of border restrictions with Macau, allowing Macau residents to apply to cross for business purposes and “special reasons” without undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
Macau residents are able to apply for the exemption using an online registration system from 11 June. The daily application quota is limited, but the actual quota, implementation date or other details have yet to be confirmed.
According to information released Wednesday, applications must be submitted at least five days in advance with the approval process to take between two and three days. Macau’s government will then submit the approval list to the Zhuhai government.
Those residents deemed eligible will also have to receive a COVID-19 virus test and receive a “green” health code to cross the border. The approval will be effective for seven days, allowing residents to cross the border multiple times.
Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ao Ieong U, said the government will evaluate the number of applications and implementation process. Although the latest easing does not include Chinese visitors, the exemption might be extended to more groups in the future.
Likewise, Macau will send two chartered ferries to Hong Kong International Airport every day from 17 June to 16 July in order to pick up residents returning from foreign countries to Macau, while also letting non-resident workers and visitors who have been stuck in Macau leave the city via Hong Kong.
