A citizen’s group named “Recall Movement Starting With One” which stands opposed to the development of integrated resorts held a press conference on Tuesday announcing they would start collecting signatures for a petition to recall Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi from October.
The request for dismissal hopes to gain the signatures of 500,000 constituents with two months, Kyodo News Agency reports.
It was originally scheduled to start in July but has been delayed due to problems with preparation work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of delegatee calling for signatures has already reached 35,000.
Representative Yumiko Hirokoshi criticized the mayor for not changing her IR policy even after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“She continues with the IR bid even thought it will cause trouble to a lot of people. She’s not thinking about the citizens,” Hirokoshi said. “I want each and every voter to take action.”
