Macau International Airport has cancelled 5,220 flights and has only 20 daily flights scheduled to operate in May, according to information gathered by Inside Asian Gaming.
The airport has operated on a significantly subdued basis since the outbreak of COVID-19, with passenger flow plunging 50% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with 1Q19 and cargo volume down 25%. April’s aircraft movements dropped 70% compared to March.
The director of Macau’s Civil Aviation Authority, Chan Weng Hong, had previously revealed that just 950 passengers travelled via Macau International Airport last month.
Now it seems the aviation industry doesn’t anticipate any improvement in May. With thousands of flights cut, the few remaining flights to and from Macau are mostly between Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanning, Xiamen, Taipei, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul and Bangkok.
However, Macau International Airport also stated that final operating routes will need to be determined practically in order to comply with the latest preventative measures of Macau and the flight destinations.
